Speaking on Armed Forces Day which is being held tomorrow, Saturday 24th June 2010, Ann McKechin MP paid tribute to the dedication and commitment of soldiers, sailors and pilots of the British Armed Forces.

During the 2010 election, Labour promised to implement an Armed Forces Charter which would have strengthened the law protecting the rights and entitlements of those who serve and risk their lives for the country.

Ann McKechin MP said:

Ann McKechin MP”Our Armed Forces are world class and deserve the support and recognition of the whole country. Armed Forces Day gives us all a chance to stand up and pay tribute to them past and present”

“In Afghanistan and elsewhere they put their lives on the line to protect our national security. We all owe them a huge debt and I particularly want to recognise the sacrifices anad achievements made by the Armed Forces based here in Glasgow North”.

Ann will be joining the Lord Provost, Councillor Bob Winterfor Glasgow's event, which takes place on Saturday 27 June. Some 500 service personnel and veterans, will march past the City Chambers and on to George Square, where a short service will be staged at the Cenotaph, between 11:50am and 12.30pm. The service will include a presentation of veterans badges, and will include in a fly-past.

The general public are most welcome to attend the service in the Square, and can enjoy displays of military hardware and fun activities from 11:00am until 4:00pm.

Ann explained that she will continue to press for a Forces Charter with Labour in Parliament:

“I am proud it was a Labour Government that introduced Armed Forces day and of our record in delivering for them and their families.”

“During the election Labour committed to introducing a Forces Charter to enshrine the rights of our Armed Forces in law. Today I am calling on the government to go ahead with this charter to ensure our troops in Scotland get all the possible support and help available”

Labour’s Shadow Secretary for Defence, Bob Ainsworth, on Armed Forces Day said:

Bob Ainsworth MP"Today is an opportunity for people up and down the country to recognise the achievements and sacrifices of our outstanding troops and veterans. Their bravery and courage are what make our Armed Forces world class.”

“Today my thoughts are with those who have lost their loved ones in Afghanistan and elsewhere. We can never repay the immense sacrifice they have made but we can ensure that we do everything we can to support them”

“On Armed Forces day, which I am proud Labour introduced, I am sure communities up and down the country will be taking this chance to say thank you to our Armed Forces, who do so much for our country, and their families who offer them such huge support.”
