Yesterday the Government announced that the National Minimum Wage will increase from October 2009 - benefiting a million low-paid workers across the country.
The National Minimum Wage for low-paid workers aged 22 and over will rise from £5.73 to £5.80 an hour; the rate for 18-22 year olds will increase from £4.77 to £4.83; and for 16-17 year olds it will go up from £3.53 to £3.57 an hour. From October 2010 the top rate of National Minimum Wage will be extended to 21 year olds. Welcoming the increase, Glasgow North MP Ann McKechin, said: "I'm pleased that we're increasing the minimum wage again. Many Glaswegians depend on the wage and without it, we'd be back to square one in the fight against poverty pay." The decision will directly help the weekly and monthly take home pay of 81,000 people in Scotland. No one should receive less than the National Minimum Wage- If you believe that you are not receiving the NMW, you can contact the National Minimum Wage helpline on 0845 6000 678, Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. The Minimum Wage helpline gives confidential help and advice on the minimum wage, and takes calls in many languages. If you aren’t being paid the NMW you can make a complaint to the National Minimum Wage helpline.
