The launch of the first wave of the Labour Government's jobs funding programme, allocated today (29 Jul), means that over 300 jobs will be created by Glasgow City Council and 163 jobs will be created by City voluntary organisations over the next few months, with the prospect of more on the way. Commenting on the announcement that Glasgow bidders have been successful in securing 467 job placements through the Labour Government’s Jobs programme, Glasgow North MP, Ann McKechin said: "I welcome the start of this intervention to prevent young people in our communities falling into the benefits trap and I would like to congratulate Glasgow’s successful fund bidders.
"In the recessions of the 1980s and 1990s hundreds of thousands of unemployed young people were abandoned without support. Many communities and many of the families I fight for in my constituency had a generation lost to work and have borne the scars of long-term unemployment for years. “I am determined that this must not happen again and that every young person should get help to find a job or training or work skills and experience."
The new job places for those aged 18 to 24 are just the beginning of the Future Jobs Fund, a programme of job creation specifically designed to prevent a repeat of a lost generation in the benefits trap which hit Glasgow hard during the home grown recessions of the 1980s and 90s. No one should forget that the funding for this rolling programme of job placement creation was opposed every step of the way in Parliament by Conservative MPs. The Secretary of State for Scotland, Jim Murphy MP said: "This is great news for Scotland and a significant first step for the Future Jobs Fund. It is a good example of the UK Government acting decisively to tackle youth unemployment to ensure we do not abandon a generation of young people as happened in previous recessions. "These are real jobs which will give real help to the long term unemployed alongside the skills, experience and knowledge they need to return to the workforce, providing support where it is needed most. "We have a huge responsibility to unemployed Scots and we are doing everything we can to make a difference. If we work together, we will get through this recession together. I am looking forward to seeing how the Future Jobs Fund develops in Scotland and hope to visit some of the successful bidders shortly."
The fund will create employment opportunities in Glasgow as a result of successful bids by Glasgow City Council and the City's voluntary organizations, which coordinated their bids through the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO). - The Future Jobs Fund is a £1 billion targeted investment to make sure every young person is guaranteed a job not abandoned on the dole. Today's first wave of funding will secure the set up of 47,000 new job placements across the UK.
