Colin Montgomerie opens new Ruchill Golf Course
Saturday, 03 October 2009 12:10

Councillor Leader Steven Purcell, Colin Montgomerie OBE, Ann McKechin MP and Councillor Jim MacKechnie

On 17 September I was pleased to join Ryder Cup Captain, Colin Montgomerie, who performed the inaugaration of the new Ruchill Community Golf Course.

Colin has been personally involved in designing the new course in the centre of our community, one of the few completely inner-city golf developments in the UK.

Greater Glasgow has around 44,000 active golfers, and there are 13 municipal courses open to the general public.

Colin Montgomerie and young golfersI'm very proud that the new Ruchill course, which has been redesigned, redevloped and reopened after 12 years, will be available for golfers on a full time basis from April 2010. It is great to see a new leisure and sports facility for the local community.

Free Golf for kids

When Glasgow City Council abolished charges for municipal tennis, four times as many citizens took it up. Abolition of the charges for sport and healthy living is basic and vital to ensuring we bring up a generation of Glaswegians who can afford to enjoy good health.

If sitting in front of the TV is free for our kids, then the chance to do something healthy should be free too.

That's why it is excellent news that the Council will now also abolish all charges for all under-18s who live or study in Glasgow at the municipal golf courses across the city including Ruchill.

The new Ruchill Golf Course will also be a training centre for greenkeepers and club managers.
